The Academy Awards, affectionately known as the Oscars, are the most prestigious awards in the film industry, considered as a pinnacle of achievement. Presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), these awards celebrate excellence in various aspects of filmmaking, ranging from acting and directing to cinematography and sound design.
History of Oscars
The first Academy Awards ceremony took place on May 16, 1929, at a private dinner held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles. The ceremony was a private dinner event attended by around 270 guests. The winners were announced well in advance. The first radio broadcast was in 1930 and the first televised ceremony in 1953. The sealed-envelope system for announcing winners was adopted in 1940.
The iconic Oscar statuette, officially named the Academy Award of Merit, featuring a knight holding a sword standing in front of a reel of film, was conceptualized by MGM art director Cedric Gibbons and brought to life by sculptor George Stanley in 1928.
